Finger Limes Melbourne is a Melbourne-based small business that specialises in Australian bush food and citrus plants.
We began our journey when our founder & CEO Shamil discovered and fell in love with the uniqueness of the Australian indigenous bush food in his career as a chef. His curiosity eventually expanded to growing his own native edible plants and citrus trees on his humble balcony.

What started as a few plants in a small greenhouse has now become one of the industry leaders. Today, Finger Limes Melbourne finds its place between everyday consumers and home growers. Our mission is to provide alternative ways to improve food sustainability in our community, where people can share their passion and knowledge.

Our next goal is to expand the native Australian influence to the world, as well as to educate our fellow Australians on the potential of the food that has been growing naturally on our land for centuries.

Introduction to Finger Limes

Finger Lime, or "Gulalung" in the Bundjalung language, is a type of citrus that originates from the rainforests between southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales.

The particularity of these trees comes from the incredible finger-shaped fruit filled with pearls resembling caviar. They serve as an important source of vitamins and minerals for the Aboriginal peoples, who have adopted their nutritional value for centuries. More recently, finger lime has made it into the mainstream culinary arts where it is appreciated as one of the rarest and most praised fruits.

The pearls that burst with refreshing citrus juice and the trees that produce them are available in many shapes and colours at Finger Limes Melbourne. One of our fundamental values is to work along with indigenous communities across Australia. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples were the first pioneers of discovering the bush food we enjoy today, their knowledge and wisdom accumulated over tens of thousands of years.

Our stock is a reflection of our respectful relationship with these indigenous communities. A part of our Native Australian Plants is sourced from Aboriginal-owned businesses in New South Wales and Queensland.

What's more, we donate $1 from every Native Australian Plant sold to various projects that help Aboriginal children across Australia. From buying school supplies to providing transport between remote villages and medical facilities, you're taking part in giving back to the producers of your loved plants when you shop with us.

Environmental Footprints

Without a healthy environment, we could not grow the plants we love and enjoy. At Finger Limes Melbourne, single-use plastic is only used where there is no better option, but we are always looking for more sustainable alternatives.

Not only do we use recycled paper for our marketing content, but we have also gone paperless for our plant care instructions. Where bagging is needed, we opt for recycled and compostable bags rather than traditional plastic bags. The pots and stakes within our business get used multiple times to prolong the lifespan of the materials, which is why you may receive your plants in scratched pots. We also encourage you to step back and think of ways to reuse and recycle them before throwing them away, pots and glass bottles alike.
